Where my research stands to date

There are currently 4 distinct lines descended from Papineau's that I have found to date.

the descendants of:

Jean Testard (my line)
Samuel Papineau (ancestor of the Canadian revolutionary Louis Joseph Papineau)
Jacob Papineau (the British Line)
Jean Papineau (Huguenot refugee who's descendants changed the name to Popenoe/Poppino)

Jean Testard (my line):

I have the direct male line traced back to my Great x 9 grandfather Jean Testard.   He was born Abt. 1612 in Rouen, Normandie (Seine-Maritime), France and died March 18, 1705 in Montréal, Canada.  His son Charles was born in 1640 in Rouen, Normandie (Seine-Maritime), France.  Charles married Anne LaMarque who was born July 07, 1648 in St-Andre, Bordeaux, Guyenne, France.

Both Anne and Charles were born in France and their parents were born in France.   To see where they where from on a map, visit my Ancestors who came from 17th Century France to New France page.

Their parents are:

  • Louis LaMarque (b. 1623) and Marie Papineau (b. 1627).  They were from Bordeaux, France.  They attended the church of Ste-Colombe, diocése de Bordeaux, Gueyenne, France.  Bordeaux is on the southern coast of France.

  • Jean Testard (b. about 1612) and Anne Godefroy (b. 1615).  They were from Rouen, France.  They attended St. Vincent church in Rouen, Normandie, France.  Rouen is on the French coast south west of Paris.

The best source of info I have found to date was from GÉNÉALOGIE DE LA FAMILLE TESTARD DE MONTIGNY.  Written by Archange Godbout in 1941.  In the first chapter he states (this is translated from the original French)

It was affirmed that Jean Testard, author of the Canadian branch, was native of Rouen.  The state cival of this city does not mention Testard before 1669.  We believe the family originating in Saint-Antoine-la-Forest (Seine-Lower, district of Montdidier, canton of Lillebonne).  Indeed, by its marriage contract signed to Rouen, November 10 1670 (G Liot, notary), Anne Testard, girl of Jean, receives in dowry 150 livres to be taken on certain heritages belonging to the Jean and located in the Saint-Antoine-la-Forest parish. What seems to confirm this assumption is that the Godefrey family, to which had been combined Jean Testard, was Trinity-of-Mount, parish close to Saint-Anthony, and it is also the title of << Sieur de la Forest >> what adopted in Canada Jacques Testard, son of Jean.
Fact that will surprise more than one of our historians, the Testard families and Godefroy, its allied, were calvinists.  All the acts raised of them, in Rouen, are consigned to the registers of the protesting temple of Quevilly.

The descendants of Samuel Papineau:

There is a large volume of documentation on the descendants of the great grandfather of  Canadian revolutionary Louis Joseph Papineau.  His name was Samuel Papineau (1670-1739).  I have attempted to include all his known descendents in my database.  If you would like to learn more about Samuel, and his descendants, a few good websites to visit are:

The descendants of Jacob Papineau who I refer to as the patriarch of the British line.

While living in London, England in the mid 1980's, my family me a woman named Valerie Papineau.  She lived in the same town (Pinner), that we did in the north west outskirts of London and had been given our library card by mistake.  So she introduced herself and brought a copy of her family tree with her.  She passed away about a year ago, but I got a copy of this information from her nephew David Papineau who is a teacher of Philosophy at Kings College in London.  I have included all that in my database and have since found others who are descended from Jacob Papineau and they are on my website

Jean Papineau the patriarch of the Popenoe/Poppino families.

About 1686, Jean Papineau, a Huguenot refugee, came to North America.  His two sons, John and Peter, are the patriarchs of the two branches of the family today:    the first generally spelled Poppino and the other Popenoe.

For more information on this line, please see Oliver Popenoe's website www.popenoe.com
